What surprised me in this article was the term CALL (Computers and Language Learning). I
read that this term had been since the 1960’s; however, I had not any idea
about what this acronym was about. Computers and language learning has
developed the manner of how teachers encourage students to acquire a second
language. This article is indeed useful because clarifies the erroneous belief
that computers might substitute a teacher. This assumption is considered wrong
because according of the current practices and research that several authors
have made; the quality of teaching and learning the target language can be
approached with the blending of technology.
Something I want to remember from this article are the
advantages of the usage of CALL in the learning process, such as the fun factor
to motivate language learning, a cooperative environment stimulating
interaction with others, the necessity of apply a corresponding language in computer-
assisted discussions, and the benefits of improve the four main skills
(reading, listening, speaking and writing). The target language can be reached
with the help of software and programs that will enhance a particularly skill. For
example, to improve writing skill, there are a variety of programs that helps
to correct any misspelling word. Also, to improve speaking and listening, it
can be used interactive video programs where the movements of the lips can be
watched. This information is helpful to our future learning because as future
teachers, it is mandatory been trained in how to use technology and how to apply
it into the acquisition of the target language.
Hello Karla,
ReplyDeleteI'm really glad to read that now you and CALL get to know each other :) Can you imagine how long technolofy has been part of the languages learning landscape?
Thanks for pointing out that technology cannot substitute teachers. It's good that you were able to come to this conclusion based on the information provided by these authors.
Keep up the good work!
I am glad as well to meet for the first time CALL. When I listen to the word “technology” my mind goes straight to 2000’s; however, thanks to this article my knowledge about CALL has changed. I will always defend teacher’s work, because it is not easy but it is rewarded, and computers will never have the commitment to teach as a computer.
DeleteI really like your post because it portraits the advance that CALL has had through the years. The development of software has been totally crucial for the language learning. What really surprised me about it was that even games, which are not related to language learning, encouraged us to develop a language just because they use that language.
ReplyDeleteIt is important to recognize that the resources that we have now is the result of the effort that a lot of people who preceded us made. In that sense, thinking about the future, What kind of language technological tool do you think will be a reality in the future?
Unfortunately, when the topic of technology comes up, it seems that in our country we have to wait until we can have a total access to it. However, thinking about the future, I consider that holograms will be an effective and easy way to learn. I have seen movies in which programs can be manipulated even whit sensors that are located in your head. Furthermore, in the future it will not be odd that per each student, they will have their own laptop or tablet. New generations want to learn in a different way, not like us, that we learned with books; but as teachers we need to fit and help our students no matter how developed the technology is.
