Week 3: Podcasts and Syllabus Integration

After reading both articles about the integration of technology in the classrooms, the term “podcast” appeared and it was not until I finished reading that I realized how important the elaboration of a syllabus is. In a previous analysis I have expressed that technology will never substitute a teacher; however, a teacher really needs to blend technological sources to develop a successful class. It is important to think outside the box, it is true that textbooks are useful, but listening to a radio program or reading an essay of a native speaker goes beyond than a book.

It would be fantastic to receive in any subject of English, the opportunity to be in a video conference of other students that are learning a second language; students of different countries would be sharing their ideas and feelings about the acquisition of another language at the same time. Technology not only involves the use of a computer, it requires the interaction of the students with podcasts that will help them to have a better understanding and retention of any subject. Here is where teachers need to be focused on, a teacher will not invent how to incorporate technology in the classroom, first, it is required to establish the needs, options and type of knowledge the students will have access.

Now that we are learning how to elaborate a syllabus, as future teachers we have the task to think in our students’ needs. They will received the same subjects, but we can be the difference, let’s add something fresh and meaningful to our class, let’s set goals for us and for them, let’s think about how innovate can we be, so that students can interact with the podcasts to awake in them the curiosity and the motivation of learning.

  1. I agree with you Karla I know that technology will never substitute a teacher, simply the technology is an important tool that benefits to help classes in a second language. Well, if podcasts are the distribution of multimedia files like audios, videos, also this is a good way that will be helping to students listening skill and a better understanding. In this mode the students can interact and practice maybe with something real that they can analyze and understand from a different point: Podcasts of audio, Podcasts of video and others. By the way, I like your blog and your analyze Karla.

    1. Thank you for your comment Lily. As future teachers we must think always in how to improve ourselves so that students can have access to a better education. It is incredible that ESL students can improve themselves when they have access for real audios just to click on it. Probably there are a variety of tools that can help us; the issue is that we unknown them or we do not know how to apply it. If we could not learn using this type of technology, it does not mean that we cannot use it, but we can be prepare and challenge ourselves.

  2. It seems you are very motivated, and you just passed it on to me. I liked the part where you mentioned that we need to think outside the box because that is the only way to innovate and include new and useful tools to teach English. You also mentioned how awesome it will be to share with other students in a video conference, and you are completely right; it would be breathtaking even for us because I just thought that I have never done something like that as student, so it would be very good to try to do it as a future teacher, and I know that my students will love it.

    1. Thank you for your words Lucy! I’m glad to read that you are motivated. I know that sometimes is difficult to overcome technological issues; however, if we keep our positive mind, our teacher’s job will be more than regarding. By writing in this blog, I tried to establish two points of view, student and future teacher. I believe that when we were learning a second language, it goes through our mind how could we learn in an easier way. In fact, now we have to think how our students will learn. We should try the video conference one day and see in our students’ expression the satisfaction of learning.

  3. I really like your analysis Karla .Is important that you said about technology never substitute teachers and it is only a support in the class . The idea of use videos in the classroom is a such well idea.Interacting with another people from other countries ,with native speakers will be so helpful for them.Teachers should to know the student's needs, and adapt the class for them. Consecuently, learning to elaborate a syllabus is a challenging because is imporntant to achieve the goals in terms of the learning a second language .
